It's test week, folks! We've worked extremely hard all year to get to this point and I have complete faith in all of my students' abilities! As you can imagine, we've continued our SOL review all of this past week, so it's been more of the same aside from the excitement of losing the computer projector in the middle of the week week (who knew one little bulb can cause so much trouble?), thus making the previously planned Kahoot! review games impossible. Thankfully, it was fixed on Friday, so we'll be able to play (i.e. continue our review) in the MSM2 classes at the start of the week before their test.
I'd like to encourage the kids to get a good night's sleep the night before their SOL test (see days above) and a good breakfast that morning if possible. They should also make sure they've fully charged their Chromebooks the night before and that it's had a full, proper shutdown using the shutdown option on screen (the actual power button on the keyboard might instead put the Chromebook into power-save mode if not held down long enough). Students are encouraged to bring pencils and their two additional writing implements, but I'll have some available in the classroom as well. I'll still be able to work with my MSM2 classes through Tuesday since they are taking a different test than my first period honors class, so I encourage them to continue asking any questions they might have through Tuesday evening (via email, Edmodo message, or Google Docs outside of class hours).
Once scores are made available and teachers are allowed to share those scores with students and their parents/guardians, I will post them into Synergy (ParentVUE/StudentVUE). It will not be for a grade (though as I've told the kids, if the score is higher--using the high school exam conversion chart--than their term 4 assessment grades, those grades will be bumped up to reflect the growth), but this is the quickest, simplest way to share the scores quickly with everyone at once.
I unfortunately will not be able to hold a tutoring session after school this week as I have a meeting, but I will hold one the following week at the very least (possibly one final session on 6/6). Even though SOL testing will be finished and we do not have any new math topics, we'll be starting our coding PBL project and the kids will still have the final month of IXL time to wrap up, so I'll be there to give the kids the extra time and to help as needed. There is also the possibility that some students might not pass the SOL test initially and if they score a 375-399, they can retake the test with parent/guardian permission on June 6th, so I'll be available to help students prepare for that as well.
I know the kids do not usually read these updates, so I'd like to ask parents/guardians to convey and reinforce this last part to them...
Again, we've worked extremely hard all year to get to this point and again, I have complete faith in all of my students' abilities! You all have studied, reviewed, practiced, and even played your way to math success. All I can ask is that you come in confident and try your best. No matter your results, I'm proud of you all! While the SOL test is obviously important for various reasons, it's one test, one day. I've seen you all mature and grow so much throughout this year, both academically and socially, and that (IMHO) is the most important thing. You've got this!
