Howdy folks! Before getting into the work of the week, I'd like to take the opportunity to point out certain parts of these weekly updates to make sure everyone is aware of the details it contains. At the start of these updates, the part listed under "Math Unit" links to all of the assignments for the current unit(s), which often includes digital copies of the notes and has additional resources/work we do not always cover in class. The "CCPS Student Digital Resource" part is a link to a county site I helped make two summers ago; it has additional notes in the Explanation section, links to outside resources (other math sites, related videos, games, etc.) in the Explore section, and additional practice questions (with a link to the key so students can check their work) in the Evaluate section. The county has it set up so that a county login is required, so the kids will need to be logged into their school account to access it. This week I've also started including a link to the "Daily Agenda" that the kids use everyday to see what we'll be covering each day. Additionally, any sites mentioned in the body of these updates is linked back to the site. If anyone is ever looking for anything in particular or has questions about anything in these messages or regarding class/work, please feel free to email at any time.
Now onto math! It was a short week, but we stayed busy this first week of the second term. I had all the classes start using TenMarks this week for their daily warm ups at the start of class. In addition to providing the kids with an explanation for the problems they get wrong, it also helps me more quickly identify the most common mistakes students are making when solving problems. The site also provides parents with their own login to monitor their child's progress, so if there are any parents who would like the info, please let me know and I can look it up and send it.
For the honors class, the week was spent reviewing their previous knowledge of algebra, translating expressions/equations and solving one- and two-step equations. The kids did well with the translating and the one-step equations, but there were a few stumbles over the two-step equations at first. I was able to clear that up for them, but we'll review first thing on Monday before the kids take the quiz to make sure they all remember. This week the MSM2 classes covered the real number system; the kids have done fairly well with it, but there is still a little difficulty with understanding how some numbers can be part of more than one group. To help with that and to explain nested Venn diagrams in general, I used a matryoshka (a Russian nesting doll) to help the kids understand how each part builds outward. We'll do a little extra review on Monday before the quiz to make sure the kids have gotten past the confusion as well as to cover a few tricks that can often pop up on assessments.
Well, I'm going to wrap things up here as I've got a few recommendations to write for some of my former students who are now applying to specialty centers. As always, if anyone has questions, feel free to email. I hope everyone enjoys the weekend!
