Greetings and welcome to the busiest time of the year! At least it is for most of the folks I've talked with recently and I know it's true for me (still have most of a present to finish crocheting before Christmas!), so I'm going to again try to keep this quick. I'm not always great at that (you've probably noticed I can get a bit loquacious), but let's give it a try.
The 7H class worked on ratios, rates, and proportions this week, something they all found pretty easy and breezed through pretty fast. This came in handy since it allowed for extra time for the students to participate in the Hour of Code, which I'll get into in a bit. They'll be moving onto consumer math this week, which ties into the previous week's work. The MSM2 class worked on inequalities. Most did fairly well with the small differences in solving inequalities in comparison to solving equations, though some still need to finish the quiz that was started on Friday, which they'll get this week.
Finally, my favorite thing from this week was being able to give my students the opportunity to participate in the Hour of Code. In their words, "The Hour of Code is a global movement reaching tens of millions of students in 180+ countries... We live in a world surrounded by technology. And we know that whatever field our students choose to go into as adults, their ability to succeed will increasingly hinge on understanding how technology works. But only a tiny fraction of us are learning computer science, and less students are studying it than a decade ago." There are incredible opportunities for students interested in going into the computer science field and just last week I saw a piece on the news (link 1 and link 2) about a coding high school that CodeVA will be starting in the fall of 2017 (that's when this group will be heading to high school!). It sounds like an amazing opportunity and I've reached out to my contacts at CodeVA to find out more about it in order to share it with my students, but in the meantime I can give my students a few additional opportunities in my class, like that of the Hour of Code.
Well, that will have to be it for now. Not too long, but not too short either. I have to be headed out soon for my nieces Christmas program and we've got a busy week ahead of ourselves, but as always, feel free to email or message me if you have any questions.
