Happy Friday, folks! We're just three days out from the next transition of this school year (I think this might be "first day" #5 at this point?) and I can't wait to welcome kids back into the classroom. Of course I (along with every other EDMS teacher) will still be 100% there for the kids/families who were more comfortable sticking with virtual through the end of the year, but there will be some adjustments made as we move to this next phase.
Every SOAR class has gone over how things will adjust next week, but Dr. Strittmatter will still hold his usual morning meeting on Monday (even though it's a fully async day, no live classes) to review expectations. Things won't change too drastically in regards to classes, though we will have yet another new schedule coming our way. The schedule, which includes details for the different lunch waves, can be found on my class website here. The first tab says it's for 7th grade, which is true, but it mostly works for 6th and 8th as well (in case you have other children at EDMS). The differences lie in when lunch is for each grade, but I have a separate tab going over those details as well. Additionally, I have a pretty detailed map, which includes room numbers with teacher names, here for any student who needs the refresher or might not have had an opportunity to familiarize themselves with where all of their classes are located.
In regards to math class this week, we started working on probability, which I think a lot of the kids have enjoyed... at least I hope that's the case! Several kids made comments along the lines of "this is 'their' math topic," which I took to mean they enjoy it and/or really feel comfortable with the topic. As always, word problems have a tendency to be the Achille's heel for some, but we worked on it in great detail and have a running list of words and phrases that have popped up in our work as clues to break down the questions (ex. "returned" indicates that the problem is an independent probability question while "not returned" generally indicates [with a few noted exceptions] a dependent problem).
Some students have asked for some additional resources to help them practice these topics. There are a few additional resources in the unit module as well as several practice quizzes provided in the quiz module, but I'd like to remind the kids that there are many other resources available on my class Portaportal. I'm also going to set up the extra credit assignment, which will be located on ALEKS, early to give some additional opportunities to practice. We'll be reviewing in class on Tuesday and then taking the quiz for this unit on Wednesday.
I'm going to wrap things up here, but as always please reach out if you have any questions. I hope you all have an amazing weekend!
