Howdy! I was issued a new laptop at school at lunch today, so I'm in the midst of getting it all set up and will thus keep this update a quick one. First, I'd like to thank the folks who sent in snack and pencil donations this week; you guys rock! Thank you so much for the help as it was all greatly appreciated. The kids have pretty much demolished the snacks, so we can still (and probably always) use more donations if anyone is willing and able. We do still have a few pencils in the dispenser, but I'll never say "no" to more pencils.
In regards to math this week, we've been working on surface area and volume all week long. We started with rectangular prisms and cylinders, which is partially a review for students, though at this level we build in the complexity of having to "rewrite" the formulas for various word problems to suit the requirements (ex. if finding how much paper is needed for a soup can, you'd eliminate the two circles from the formula) as well as exploring what happens when you change an attribute of a prism (ex. when you double the width, you're also doubling the volume). We moved onto pyramids (specifically square-based) and cones, which are new to students, though we still build in the complexity of having to modify our formulas for both shapes. We'll be continuing this topic on Monday before taking the quiz on Tuesday. As mentioned in the top section, this unit will be the first grades for the final marking period; this is to allow plenty of time to make up any of these assignments before the third quarter ends next week. However, this does mean that the due dates on Canvas had to be adjusted to match the official start of term (otherwise it wouldn't sync with StudentVUE/ParentVUE correctly), so you will see those assignments already populated on SVUE/PVUE if you switch to Marking Period 4 and will possibly see them marked as missing or even late before the dates listed, such as with the BrainPOP quizzes I assigned to go with this unit.
Before I wrap this up, I just want to remind everyone that all of the third term's Canvas assignments will "lock" at midnight on Monday; this gives me time to ensure I've been able to review all grades and make any corrections necessary as well as time to ensure they sync with SVUE/PVUE in time (I've heard that it can get a little back-logged the last day of term, which is another reason I'm putting this current unit onto the final term). The kids will still be able to make up any missing ALEKS topics and take advantage of the JLab extra credit opportunity.
Well, that should do it (and is yet again longer than I was originally going to send), so I'll end things here and wish you all an amazing (though possibly icy?) weekend!
