It's Chromebook week and I couldn't be happier! The kids were just as excited as I was to get the Chromebooks on Monday. We spent a bit of time getting our Google Drives organized, joined the class Edmodo group while getting rid of the old groups, and familiarizing ourselves with some of our math tech resources (such as the class website) and bookmarking the things that will be used on a daily or weekly basis. For the most part, the kids should have a full year with the Chromebooks under their belts, but even those who think they've mastered the tech have things they can still learn, so teaching the technology is just as important to me as the math. I will try to show the kids something new each week, even if it's a small thing. For instance today, my first period class had a Be the Teacher assignment that required "checking" a fictional student's work; for those completing the assignment electronically, I showed them how to add checkmarks to the document, which seemed to amaze and excite many of the kids.
Now onto the math! We wrapped up our work on exponents, powers, and roots for the moment, though it will pop up again when we get to scientific notation as well as comparing and ordering rational numbers later in the term. All classes then moved onto integers. For most of the 7H students, this is a review topic (meaning not tested in Math 8 SOL on its own) but needed for working with order of operations (which is a tested Math 8 SOL topic); for the MSM2 students integers were introduced last year and we are now building on that knowledge with integer computation this year. Since all classes now have the option of completing the work electronically, I took a little time to show the kids how they can send questions outside of class time via GoogleDocs. If I happen to be online at the time, then I can sometimes give a little help immediately with some virtual tutoring directly in the GoogleDoc assignment. I've already had two students take advantage of this and I think they found it extremely helpful after they got stuck in the middle of homework. The 7H students for the most part do not really need extra time with integers, so the quiz covering both square roots and integers will be on Monday. My two MSM2 classes are currently scheduled to take the quiz on Tuesday next week, but depending on how the rest of today and Monday's classes go, the.
I'm going to close this out for now. Please check out the class website when you get a chance; you'll find tons of information there to help kids have a successful year. If you ever have questions/concerns, feel free to reach out at anytime.
