Hello again, everyone! First, thanks to folks who reached out with well wishes for my mom after last week's update. Her procedure went well and while we're waiting for some final test results to come in, the doctor was optimistic the results will be good. I'd like to thank the kids for being overall good for the substitute that day; they were a little bit rambunctious, but that's pretty normal for this time of year and they tried to keep their excitement for the upcoming break in check as much as possible.
The honors class started the week with a test after a little extra review and as always had great results. There are a couple students who let the Khan Academy review assignment slip by them, so they are reminded that even though the test has been taken, the Khan Academy assignment still needs to be finished as it was also given for a grade. Most of the rest of the week was spent on ratios, rates, and proportions, which was predominately a review for this first portion. It will lead to slightly more complicated word problems and later to consumer applications and percent problems next week and after the break.
The MSM2 classes continued their work with two-step equations this week. We were also scheduled to work on multi-step equations before the quiz, but since they needed a little extra help with two-steps and multi-steps is a Math 8 standard, we only spent a small bit of time on the multi-steps and I instead gave the kids a quiz covering equations just through two-steps. The extra time paid off as kids overall had good results. For the students who didn't do quite as well as they'd hoped, I want to again emphasize the importance of working the problem out on paper rather than strictly in the calculator or in their heads; the more complex the problems become, the more important this gets. This is also just as important for the newest topic we started after the quiz, solving and graphing inequalities, which we'll continue next week.
On Friday, students who had finished all previous assignments in all my classes took part in the "Hour of Code," which is aimed at exposing students to the world of coding and the possibilities it entails. The kids all seemed to really enjoy it and even when the code left them feeling a little challenged, they were eager to work past it and find a solution. I was incredibly proud of how well they took to it. We'll be coming back to coding again later in the school year after SOL testing is finished and I hope this has left the kids eager to continue.
Well, I've got a jam-packed weekend of seasonal events, so I'm going to close things out here. I'm walking the Tacky Light Run with some of my family later tonight, so if any of you will be out there, give us a wave. Stay warm folks!
