Howdy! Week 2 is now officially complete and we're now fully submersed into the math world but before getting into this week's "math happenings," I realized that I forgot to point out a couple details for these emails that might come in handy for parents and guardians. At the top of these messages you will always find a quick list of the basics for the week with the SOL(s)/topic(s) covered along with links to the unit folder(s) that has digital copies of all the work, even those things I give out paper copies for in class. Additionally, I link our Daily Agendas, which list the assignments/tasks for each day and generally a few additional resources, including related math games and videos. I believe I also forgot to mention my homework policy. I don't technically have a "homework policy" as I don't assign separate work specifically for homework, but I do ask that the kids complete anything that wasn't completed in class that day (generally there's at least one independent task for the kids to work on outside of whole group instruction) and to review those materials. As previously mentioned, the kids are also expected to complete at least 10 topics on ALEKS each week and while they are given some time in class, they can also work on completing this at home.
In regards to our math work this week, we've been reviewing integers, starting with just the basics of what an integer even is along with absolute value and then moving onto basic operations. The kids have done well with the work overall, though my fourth block group has been a little more limited on time due to the dismissals at the end of the day along with yesterday's tornado drill cutting into our class time yesterday. Additionally, all the classes got a little shortchanged on instruction yesterday because my own laptop kept shutting down on me (the joys of 21st century teaching), so it left us a little behind schedule. That being said, I had planned for all the kids to complete their first graded check today and while some did, others are still working on it, so they've been told they can finish that up at home this weekend or during the first part of class next Tuesday.
I'm going to wrap things up a little faster here since I've got one of my nieces who is also an EDMS student patiently waiting for Aunt Kimmie to finish working so I can take her home today, but if anyone has any questions, please don't hesitate to reach out. I hope everyone has an amazing weekend!
