Greetings! I lost my planning for meetings every day this week but today, so I'm going to try to get this out early. Before getting into this week's math happenings, we would like to request your support in getting the kids to make up their missing work. It appears that many Carver students, not just those in our classes, have mentally started their break early as students are not putting much effort into their work. We gave two days plus the first part of class today to complete a 14-question quiz and we still have many students how haven't completed it. We've had to move on, so it is now considered make-up work, which has to be completed independently at this point. Time is given at the start of each class to work on make-up work, but students are sitting toggling back and forth through tabs without actually putting any effort into their work or their not even pretending to work. While ideally we'd have them complete it at school, at this point students either need to finish the quiz along with their other assignments either at home, during Thursdays' Math Focus FLEX time, or after school at Carver FIT (see Dr. Hicks' Cougar Family Update for information about FIT).
This week's math saw us continuing our work on equations, moving further from the concrete models to the more abstract algebraic process. A majority of the students prefer using the models to solve equations, but we looked at problems that cannot be solved that way (those containing or resulting in fractions/decimals and division questions can only be done with electronic versions of the tiles). For those who really struggle when working without the algebra tiles, I've been pulling them to work in small groups or one-on-one to bridge the gap, showing alternative methods and how to connect the two methods. Since we're sticking with algebra for the next topic (one- and two-step inequalities), I'll continue doing this through our return from fall break.
As mentioned earlier, the students had two days to complete the quiz for this topic (combined with Topic 5 for the Unit 3 summative). I want to remind everyone that students can complete corrections (a digital copy of the form can be found on Canvas, but papers are provided in class and it can even be written on regular notebook paper) and as long as all parts are completed, I will reopen their quiz to give a second attempt. I've had several students asking about "extra credit" recently, but as I've told them before, there will be no "extra credit" this year as all required credit (everything listed in the Grade Book for math on StudentVUE/ParentVUE) can be redone and still has a chance to become a 100 A+.
Well lunch is over and the kids have returned, so I'll need to close things out here but as always, feel free to email if you have any questions. Hope you all have an amazing weekend!
