Greetings! Looks like we've finally entered spring, so I hope everyone has been enjoying the (mostly) beautiful weather! I wanted to get this week's update out a little early since I'm booked for "auntie's shuttle services" this weekend, so it will be a quick update since the kids will be coming to class for the last block of the day soon.
As I mentioned in the last update right before spring break, we returned to our work on composite figures. The kids have been doing really well with the topic, especially since we've gone over some tips and tricks to make the work easier and faster using the VA Desmos Scientific Calculator (this calculator is the one that will be embedded in the SOL testing program starting this year). This work merged nicely into our next unit, surface area and volume of rectangular prisms, cylinders, pyramids, and cones. The kids have been doing fairly well with this topic as well, though our work with pyramids and cones that we covered today has definitely thrown some of the kids for a loop. This is due to the occasional need to apply the Pythagorean theorem to find a missing attribute (height, slant height, side or radius). We'll be continuing our work on this Monday with our final review of the topic.
The kids will then be given a take-home quiz for homework; I'd debated on this for a bit, but having a regular "quiz day" for this and our final topic would take away some of our potential SOL review time. Since we're testing a week earlier, I decided the last two regular term quizzes (4.01 CF&SA/V and 4.02 Geo.Trans) will both be take-home (and thus also open-notes) quizzes in order to add to more review days back into my schedule. I've encouraged the kids to start their own personal SOL review and I've given them their MAP test scores and access to some linked Khan Academy review to help aid them in this. Rather than me assigning the entire class the same generic assignment, their MAP test data can fine-tune their Khan Academy review work to target their own personal areas of weakness, which also eliminates unnecessary work on their personal areas of strength (if you already "rock" at one topic, you'd "get more bang for your buck" by focusing on your weaker areas).
That should cover everything, but as always feel free to email if you have any questions. I hope everyone has a great weekend!
