Before getting into the details of the week, I wanted to let everyone know about a tech issue email I just received. The county lost connection between their student account database and my.ccpsnet.net. They are working on fixing the issue and should have all student accounts back to normal status by morning. The email says Google Drive data was not affected, but I'd imagine students cannot access it at the moment. A possible solution (more like a workaround) to alleviate the headache of any future instances would be to "Share" the work folders with the student's own personal Google account and or a parent/guardian's account; this will allow access to their work even when there are problems logging into their school accounts.
Now onto our regularly scheduled program. The 7H class wrapped up their work on one- and two-step equations before taking their quiz on Wednesday, which had pretty awesome results. They moved onto multi-step equations, a new topic for the students, who seem to be doing fairly well with what little we've already covered. We'll be continuing this unit through next week. After taking their real number system quiz, the MSM2 classes began working on translating expressions and equations or as I like to call translating from English to Mathish. While it may seem a simple topic to some, you do have to pay careful attention to how the words are combined because the simple inclusion of one extra word can completely change the math (for example, "a number less 8", which is x-8, turns into 8-x when you include the word "than"). The kids wrapped up the unit with a quiz on Friday.
All the classes also started the first lesson for our coding project. Since the first lesson is primarily an introduction and doesn't really get into the coding, I've split it up into smaller segments for us to cover at the end of class for now. We'll wrap up the first lesson this upcoming week. As we carry on, we'll devote a day every week or so to the other lessons in the project. The kids seem to be enjoying their "free time" on Code.org when they wrap up their independent work, so I'm hoping they'll enjoy the full project.
As always, please feel free to contact me with any questions at any time. I hope everyone has a great week!
