Greetings! We're all fully immersed into our algebra unit with the 7H kids tackling multi-step equations (which does include a bit of high school level Algebra I work) and the MSM2 kids starting off with one-step equations. Both groups seem to be doing an excellent job with the topics overall, but a good number seem to be tripped up by "silly math errors" rather than confusion with the topic (missing a negative so calculating incorrectly, not writing a variable, not paying close attention to the key on modeling questions, etc.). Students are reminded to slow down when working and to show all their work, even for the questions they think are "easy" as that can stop them from making those minor mistakes. It also has the added benefit of helping them form "good math habits" now that will help make Algebra I (the high school level math class all students will take some form of in 8th grade), a bit easier next year.
Many of the honors students started to really see the need for this and thus slowed themselves down a lot during Friday's quiz. Because of this, many didn't finish by the end of class; they were thus told to work on it over the weekend but to not submit until they get to class Monday. The MSM2 students mostly finished their quizzes; the few who didn't (those getting called to class for various reasons, catching up on work from absences, etc.) will be given time Monday to finish as needed.
I'm going to start wrapping this WCS up now, but I'd like to encourage everyone to check out the school's PTA page. I just finished adding all the updates the PTA president sent my way. She's started a membership drive and has gone out into the community to find everyone some extra benefits for their membership. The membership drive runs through December 18th, the last day of school before Winter Break. If you have questions about the PTA, you can send them my way or even email the PTA president (Debi Graves).
Hope everyone has a great week!
