Over the summer of 2015 I was given the opportunity to participate in a professional development course set up by CodeVA on Computer Science in Algebra. During this training we used a program created by Project Bootstrap, which was then adapted by Code.org. I'll be using the program with students as part of a PBL project. The final product of the project will have students creating their own video game, with the addition of a few non-programming components of my own (writing a backstory, creating cover art, and "public" opinion survey having friends/family review the game). An example of the game can be seen and played here (my version as I've completed the entire program as well!).
While it might not seem like there would be a lot of math in the game, all of the programming requires the use of math. Students who develop an interest in coding can extend their knowledge of programming through Khan Academy and resources available through Google for Education. Students interested in coding might also want to look into CodeRVA regional high school that is opened this school year. Check out some of the recent press about what I think is an awesome opportunity!
