Greetings! First up, an update on my laptop situation. The good news is that I have my "fixed" laptop back; the bad news is that it needed a new hard drive (expected) and is pretty behind on updates, which is a long process of frequent restarts and doesn't seem to have all the correct/required settings to effectively run at school. I'm trying to get it correctly set up again, but teachers have extremely limited rights when it comes to setting up our laptops, so I'm left with having to put in tickets with tech support and then play the waiting game. Fingers crossed I get everything back in proper working order again... wish me luck! Additionally, I wanted to thank all the folks who have sent in extra pencils the past couple weeks. It's been a huge help and it looks like we'll have enough to last us through spring break (hopefully... these kids go through pencils like it's their job). Thank you so much for the donations!
Now onto last week's math. The MSM2 students worked on similar figures. Overall they did an awesome job, using all the strategies (particularly the color-coding to match up corresponding sides/angles), but there are still a few holdouts who fight putting forth that extra effort. The strategies I show them really will help them do better overall, improving both their understanding and their scores. Please help me with encouraging the kids to give 100% of their effort!
The 7H students have worked on geometric transformations. They too have done an awesome job, though a few are still struggling with rotations at this time. I'll admit those were always the transformations that gave me the most trouble as a kid, but we thankfully only have to rotate about the origin and in 90° increments, making it a much easier topic in middle school. As long as the kids use my "rough draft" method of determining the point first then drawing, they'll avoid the pitfalls that trip some kids up.
This week we'll be reviewing everything we've covered thus far this term along with some 6th grade geometry review (7th for the honors) in preparation for the upcoming units. As a Math 7 team, we'd originally said we wouldn't have a midterm test because of all the upcoming testing this semester (two different post-tests, practice SOL tests, and the real SOL test), which I'd already mentioned in emails as well as to the kids. This week, some of the team decided they did want a test after all but since I'd already told everyone that we wouldn't have a midterm, I'm only going to use it as a formative assessment as it doesn't seem fair to go back on what I'd said.
Well, I'm going to close things out here but as always, feel free to email if you have any questions. Hope everyone has a great week!
