Greetings! I'm not feeling the greatest today, so this will end up being a super fast update, but please don't hesitate to reach out if you end up with any questions. We started off December the same way we ended November, working on solving and graphing inequalities. The kids are feeling a little more uncertain with the topic, which is entirely natural considering they're used to problems having one definite answer. Inequalities by default have a wide range of answers (sometimes literally an infinite number) and while I've tried helping boost their confidence on the topic, many of the kids are still doubting themselves. For this reason, I'd been hinting all week that I was going to "gift" them with an open-notes quiz today, which I've followed through with and that's helped the kids feel a little less uncertain. I have faith in their abilities and I know they understand the process, but just by having the opportunity to confirm their thinking through their notes, I've seen the kids relax a bit into the quiz, kind of like Linus with his little blue security blanket.
We reviewed a bit at the beginning of each class and by the time they were feeling confident enough to start, only first period had enough time to begin working on the quiz. I'd already planned on it being finished on Monday, so all classes will get started as soon as the period starts and they should all still have enough time to spare to take part in the Hour of Code. We've got an alternate schedule planned for Tuesday and Wednesday due to winter MAP testing, so we'll have to see how the rest of the week goes time wise to see whether they can have more time to code next week, but they'll definitely have other opportunities to code in my class at other points throughout the year for those students who already have an interest in the field.
I know some folks have various plans that might have kids out from now until winter break, so I've already planned out the next two weeks and while things might change depending on how far we get each day, everyone can stay caught up using the Daily Agendas for each course. Yesterday I even finished making copies of all papers as well, so I can give those to any student who knows they'll be out for whatever reason through December 20.
Well, that's about all my head can handle at the moment but as always, please feel free to email if you have any questions. I hope everyone has a great weekend!
