Howdy! Well, it's been a week! Before getting into the math, I want to ensure that everyone is aware of some new tech issues that seem to be popping up with Google Drive assignments Canvas. I don't currently have a fix that seems to work 100% of the time, but the last item ("Bad authentication credentials") on this document seems to help most of the time. I'm still searching and playing around with it to find a 100% fix, but I'm also hoping that the county, Canvas, or both will either just fix the issue or send us something that will work. I'll keep everyone posted as things develop, but in the meantime, I'll work with students on a case-by-case basis since the situation seems to vary from person to person. Fellow CCPS teachers, this is happening with on the teacher side as well and seems to be a growing issue, so if you haven't been affected yet, it will probably get to you eventually. Anyone needing help, even if it's not specifically for my class, please don't hesitate to reach out. Now with that being said, these tech issues have worn me out this week and I'm going to try to keep the rest of this update quick because I've stared at this computer far too many hours this week trying to figure it out while still getting stuff ready just to teach math.
The beginning of this week had us wrapping up inequalities and the kids taking their quiz. The quiz was "turned on" Tuesday, but since we spent some extra time reviewing, the kids were allowed to take/finish it on Wednesday for the async. The results were mixed and many students made small errors that had a big impact (forgetting to flip the symbol for "impostor" problems, dropping negatives altogether, open vs closed circle, etc); no matter the results, I highly encourage students complete quiz corrections to both improve their overall understanding as well as their grade. As always, I'll be available for extra help with the corrections during office hours on Wednesday next week and during async time when possible the rest of the week. The rest of the week was spent introducing relations and functions, which will carry over not only into next week but also into the new year after the break.
As I've mentioned in previous emails, in addition to quiz corrections, I'm still accepting missing or incomplete work from this term (starting with Unit 8), to help students improve their overall grade. As promised last week, I have an extra credit opportunity available through ALEKS. It's already "open" to students and will be available through January 10, 2021. I'd again like to ask that everyone look over grades on StudentVUE/ParentVUE and do what you can to catch up as quickly as possible. I don't assign new work over breaks, but I do highly encourage students to take advantage of the off-time to get caught up on their missing assignments. As I've begun noting in the gradebook, many of the missing assignments were completed during the live recorded class and answer keys were provided, so students should easily be able to complete those. All other assignments were at least discussed and often examples were done together and as always, I am happy to work with students during async time or office hours if they need additional help.
That should be everything but as always, please let me know if you have any questions. I hope you all have an amazing weekend! Happy Holidays!!!
