We're getting so close to the end of the year, you can almost taste it! However, we're just as busy as we've always been, so we're still hard at work. Tomorrow we will officially finish our final pre-SOL unit for the year with a quiz on the relations and functions unit in all classes after we review a bit. This quiz was originally planned for Friday, but I felt we could all use a little extra review in general on top of having a fair number of kids out for another field trip on Friday.
The functions unit has been going really well. A few of the kids have even told me they thought it would be a lot harder since we were delving back into algebra, but that they were surprised with how easy it was. Tomorrow's quiz will be the true test obviously, but I'm already incredibly proud with how much I've seen the kids start to buckle down with this current unit. I'm hoping this carries over the next couple weeks while we review for the SOL test.
Speaking of reviewing for the SOLs, the kids will be getting two different packets to review for the SOLs this week. These will be added to their SOL review folders (that extra folder on the school supply list that students turned in at the beginning of the school year), which were passed back this week and already have the first two SOL review quizzes. Additionally, we'll be practicing with the online SOL review materials and there are additional resources in my SOL review folders (Math 7 for Pd 1-2 MSM2; Math 8 for Pd 3 Math 7H), which I'll be adding to as I find new materials. Please help me by encouraging the kids to review each day.
With the start of SOL testing, we will have adjusted bell schedules on testing days to accommodate. Since I also run the school's website, I always compile a calendar version of the daily bell schedules for each grade level. Parents and guardians looking to plan around testing can locate those schedules here. That page also the details for which grades, subjects, blocks are testing. If anyone has any further questions about the testing schedule, I can answer some, but I'll freely admit my main focus is obviously the tests for my own classes. The school's counseling department or the main office can offer further clarification outside of testing for my class/grade.
Obviously our focus will be on the upcoming SOLs for the near future, but once testing is over, I've already got plans set for a couple of Math 8 topics we skipped over in the MSM2 classes since they wouldn't be on their SOL test, but more importantly, a coding PBL with all classes that some of the kids have been really eager to check out. Since some have been so eager, I'm thinking of giving them access to the program early as it will cover a fair number of SOL math topics, but we'll have to see if we end up with any "extra" time in the coming weeks. If not, the kids do at least have something that I think they'll greatly enjoy post-SOLs that might even get some thinking about future career paths.
I'm going to close things out here, but as always, feel free to reach out if you have any questions. Hope everyone has a great week!
