Upcoming Assessments: SOL Quiz - Strand 3 - Measurement & Geometry (Fri. 4/22)
Greetings! As Mother Nature has made obvious, we're in peak allergy season and it's hit me pretty hard, so I'll be keeping this week's update on the short-and-sweet side today. We started the week be making sure those who missed the last day before break were caught up on what they'd missed, specifically the first of the "mini-SOL quizzes." As previously mentioned, the five "mini-SOL quizzes" when combined are basically equivalent to one practice SOL test, so the kids are tracking their overall progress on these quizzes on a chart. I can't give them an exact equivalent score based on the quizzes (the state hasn't even decided yet how this year's scores are being done from what I've been told), but we can give a ballpark based on what we've seen in previous years. With that being said, these quizzes and all of our other work this month is all to further prepare the kids, so we're picking apart the mistakes that we're making and analyzing where things went wrong so that when faced with similar scenarios on the actual SOL test, the kids will know how to go about breaking them down.
We spent the rest of the week working on the next strand, Computation & Estimation, before taking the second quiz. This particular strand and quiz is the shortest one (it's only one SOL and the quiz only had three questions), so please don't be alarmed if you check grades and find a low grade as missing one question automatically knocks the grade down to a D+. Normally I'd never have a quiz that small for this reason, but it's just how the county's assessments are broken down; I did make sure that my own formative check had twice as many questions for this reason. Something I've forgotten to mention in my previous update but that I've told the kids, I will adjust any lower scores after the kids have taken their SOLs to account for growth. For example, if a student's SOL score is equivalent to an 85 (using the county's HS SOL grade conversion chart) but any of their fourth marking period grades are below that, I'll adjust those grades to show the growth.
One final bit of info before I close this out. In addition to the formative extra credit vocabulary activity, I officially opened up the summative extra credit opportunity (JLab quizzes again) to the students. Both are open until Monday, May 9th (this is the day before our SOL test). Details for both can be found in the announcements section of the class Canvas page, but let me know if anyone has any questions.
Well, that should cover everything, but let me know if you have any questions... or if in my allergy fog I was too confusing with anything. I hope everyone has an amazing weekend and if you celebrate, a very happy Easter as well!
