Greetings! I'm your child's 7th grade math teacher and you'll be getting updates from me at the end of each week about what we've covered in class and what's coming up, both in class and within the school. In my 1st period class, I co-teach with Ms. DeLuccia, so some of you may hear from her as well throughout the year. If you ever need to check back on something from one of these updates but find you've deleted the email, you will be able to find them in ParentVUE as well as on my class website. If you're on Twitter or Instagram, feel free to follow me @MsLambieMath for a glimpse inside my classes (with some of my family and free time thrown in here and there). Please explore my class website and feel free to email me with questions/concerns at anytime. Now onto the kids' first week back to school!
The first day was spent just introducing ourselves, handing out paperwork, and learning the class and 7th grade procedures and expectations. For day two after collecting returned papers, we got straight to work setting up our math notebooks (the 3-5 subject notebook from the supply list), which will essentially become the kids' textbook for the year. For each unit, I give the kids a set of notes to glue in, which we normally add to as we work, and the kids will be doing much of their work in this notebook as well. For the first week and a half, I'm giving them paper copies of their assignments to add into the notebook, but once they get Chromebooks, they will be given the assignments digitally for the most part, completing their work in the notebook. Sometimes students will receive assignments that are 100% digital, but they will still make note of them in the notebook so they know what to refer back to when studying. There are a few kids who did not have notebooks and I gave out those I had. Unfortunately there weren't enough for all those without, so it's very important that those students get one as soon as possible. Some only had smaller notebooks, which will work fine and there is no need to abandon it at this time, however they will likely need a second (some possibly a third) at some point as they will run out of room before the end of the year.
Our topic of the week was integers for everyone. My 1st and 2nd period MSM2 (Middle School Math 2) classes only reviewed the integer basics they covered last year and spent the rest of the time learning to add with integers, modeling on the number line and with counters first to help "discover" the rules ("normal" adding when they have the same signs, subtracting and taking the sign for the addend with the greater absolute value). My 3rd period honors class reviewed integer basics as well as adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing integers. The MSM2 classes will continue with the other operations next week, while the honors class will be moving onto exponents and roots. We'll be taking part of class on Tuesday to make sure all students remember their school password and can login, so if kids are able to try at home sometime before then, it will help hopefully make that go a little faster. We'll be getting Chromebooks on Wednesday during 1st period classes, so please make sure your child has turned in all their paperwork and fees before then if possible. If they are missing any of that, they will not be assigned a Chromebook until then.
That should about cover everything and I'm sure this is more than most of you were expecting the first week back. Again, please feel free to email me at anytime if you have any questions. I hope everyone had a great first week back to school and that everyone is enjoying this first weekend!
