Greetings! With a return from break, two days of MAP testing that came with altered schedules, trying to plan out the rest of the calendar year, and just the general energy demands of working in a middle school, I'm one tired teacher and thus going to give you another super quick update.
We jumped right back into our work with functions upon returning from fall break and have done fairly well with things, but the two testing days really through us off track and each class is in slightly different places and we thus haven't completed all the assignments in the same layout as what's showing on the Daily Agendas linked above. I was expecting it to throw things off a little, so I'd already built in a little wiggle room to next week's schedule to get the remaining material (plus a few tricks I want to share) before the kids start their quiz on Tuesday. It's expected that they may not finished the quiz that day and you'll see from the agenda that it's listed along with the Hour of Code for taking place over Tuesday and Wednesday as needed.
Speaking of the Hour of Code, being a super nerd myself, I try to encourage all the kids to give coding a try as it's a skill that can be applied in pretty much every job industry imaginable. We won't be doing anything too complicated but the kids will get some choice in their level of difficulty since a few are already super into coding themselves. No matter which project they choice to complete, they'll receive some formative extra credit points to go with it. The kids also currently have a summative extra credit opportunity available to them on Canvas, the 12 Days of Mathmas, which reviews materials from the first week of school all the way through algebraic inequalities. Please help me by encouraging the kids to take advantage of these opportunities. Those who don't really need the extra credit points for their grades can opt to receive Lambie Points for their efforts ("buy" that anime sticker you've been eying, you know you want to!).
As previously mentioned, I worked pretty hard to finish planning out the rest of the calendar year as well as the first week back from winter break. On top of just giving me the peace of mind knowing that I'm fully prepared, this is also so I can help any families who might have family plans throughout this time keep their kiddos on track with the work while out. If anyone knows they'll be out at all through January 10th, please let me know and I can make sure the student has anything they'll need before leaving. If they're last minute plans and you're unable to give advance notice, I've already updated the Daily Agendas (click here for Blocks 1 & 2, click here for Block 4) and the modules are ready to be published with the digital copies when the units' start dates arrive, so I'll have you covered on that side as well.
Well that should cover everything and yes, I realize I've returned to getting carried away (guess I got a second wind), but I wanted to make sure everyone is as ready for the next month as possible. It's a great time of year but often a chaotic time as well, so best to prepare as much as possible, right?! Anyway, let me know if you have any questions. I hope everyone has an amazing weekend!
