Happy Friday, folks! I'm not sure about you, but it's felt like a super long week to me, so I'm going to attempt to keep this (myself) brief since I still have a few things to take care of before I can head out for the weekend. Before getting into this week's math happenings, I just want to remind everyone that the term ends next week, so students should take advantage of any extra time they might have to catch up on all their classes and do what they can to improve their grades. For my class, students are reminded that they can redo all formative checks for full credit and still potentially earn 100% through Monday (technically through midnight, though I hope there aren't still up working that late!). If they haven't taken advantage of the second attempt for summative quizzes, they can still do so, again to potentially earn a 100% and even after that, they can complete quiz corrections to earn back half credit for any still incorrect questions (the form for corrections is in the modules immediately under the quiz). This is also available through Monday.
Students can also still complete any missing ALEKS topics and have the chance to earn 5 extra credit points as well through Sunday. They'll be required to have a total of 50, but that's cumulative, not just 50 for this week, so it's added to the total from previous weeks already on StudentVUE/ParentVUE (SV/PV). Finally, they have an extra credit opportunity available through the last day of term on the Canvas BrainPOP (accessed from the left side menu on the class Canvas page). Don't worry if something is listed as "Late" on SV/PV as that just means it was literally submitted after the due date, which isn't a huge concern for me due to a variety of reasons; if it were a "normal" school year, I'd be more worried about that myself, but since we're still functioning through a pandemic, lateness is a minor detail in the grand scheme of things.
Now onto this week's math happenings! We started the week with the final summative quiz of the term, which had relatively good results. For those students who did struggle, they're reminded to be careful when writing out their work on paper as well as to be careful with how they type things into the Desmos calculator. Small details make a huge difference! One missed negative sign or misplaced variable can drastically change the question and thus the results. The rest of the week was split between reviewing translating verbal expressions and equations (AKA translating from English to "Math-ish" and vice versa) and the properties of real numbers. The kids have again done relatively well with these review topics, though there have been a few struggling with some of the trickier areas. We'll continue to hit on these topics as we move along in our algebra work, but please encourage the kids to review their notes and work from this week.
Well, I got a little caught up in talking about grades, but I think I kept everything else pretty succinct. As always, please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you for all the help and support from home this quarter! Hope everyone has an amazing weekend!
