Greetings! We're in the home stretch, folks! We've got just 8 weeks of school left (39 school days) and we'll be starting our SOL review in this week (honors) or next week (MSM2). The kids will be getting the folders they turned in at the beginning of the school year back to hold all of their SOL review materials, so if they didn't turn one in then or at some point since, they'll need to get one to hold everything over the next few weeks. There seems to be a few field trips and activities coming up that will pull kids from some of their regular classes, so students are reminded to check with all of their teachers beforehand when possible (after if not) in order to keep up with classes. Everyone is reminded that Friday is an early release day. Now onto this week's happenings.
The honors class started working on relations and functions (with graphing). We worked in little bits of Algebra I along with it, a preview of our final unit that we'll work on after SOLs as it's an intro to the high school level class they'll be taking next year. The kids did great with the unit and wrapped the week up with a test on Friday. The honors class will be starting our SOL review this week after the state ARDT post-test (not a graded assessment but used for data purposes and thus required).
The MSM2 classes reviewed then wrapped up the work on probability we started right before break. We did the quiz together as review on Wednesday before the kids took the test on Thursday. Some still needed a bit of time to finish up on Friday, so they wrapped it up while the rest of the kids worked on an interactive lesson on StudyJams, an intro to our unit on data analysis. You'll notice there's quite a few assessments for the MSM2 classes this week, which isn't what I'd normally like. The quiz for Monday will be done together as a review like the other "in-house" quizzes from this term, again to help counter all the extra assessments, but also to review test-taking strategies. The ARDT post-test is required by the state for data purposes; while it is not a grade for students, they should still take it seriously as it provides valuable data and allows them to get practice with the SOL testing system. The unit test this time will be open-notes in part because we have a little less time for the unit because of the ARDT but also because I just plain feel bad about how their week is filled with assessments. The practice SOL test will take up the rest of the week (possibly with extra time to wrap up on Monday if necessary). The assessments will "calm down" a bit after this, but we'd been preparing for this rather intense week of testing since before the term started.
Well, I'm going to wrap things up here. I'll be posting the detailed SOL testing onto the school website once it's finalized by administration and guidance, but the dates for each test can already be found on the school's online announcements board. Please encourage the kids to continue their review outside of school as well and feel free to email if there are any questions.
