Daily Agenda: December 9-13, 2024
Upcoming Assessments: SUM Quiz 7 Ratios (Fri. 12/20)
Greetings! I've had a bunch of kids saying they'll be leaving earlier for break, so I'm trying to finish up all of next week's plans today so I can send them home with any papers they might end up missing and I'll thus try to keep this a brief update... we'll see if I can stick with that plan or whether I'll get carried away again.
It's been a bit of a hectic week, so plans have shifted multiple times to compensate for different events, from students getting called to make up their winter math SGA/SOL test to having to help students find missing items, so each class completed some of our activities on different days. We were all able to complete the much anticipated Fruit Loops activity on Wednesday and they did really well with picking the correct values for the activity (math seems to just be easier when you get to eat your manipulatives after). Some students are still struggling with wrapping their heads around comparing part-to-part or whole-to-whole, but as I explained to them during class, this is due to all of their prior experience (at least those that they more readily connect with it) being with "regular" fractions, part-to-whole. Again, to help not get confused with these differences, we're turning to our highlighters to color-code problems to keep everything straight and this seems to be helping.
We had to rush a bit through the beginnings of ratio tables because of the impending break and the need to complete certain tasks before next Friday. While we will continue working with those next week and connect with proportional relationships, I didn't feel the kids were 100% ready for the previously planned formative assessment. It's still required by the school that we complete this, so I had them complete their first attempt today on their own but with an allowance of using their notes and a promise that I'll be doing their second attempt with them on Monday. This is definitely not how I would prefer to go about things, but in order to stay in compliance with school/county expectations but also keeping student needs in mind, it's the best solution to keep things fair for the kids.
I don't think I got too carried away this time, but the rest of my work is calling me so we'll call it a wrap here. As always, please feel free to email if you have any questions or concerns. Have a great weekend!
