Good morning! Again I had high hopes of getting this out earlier, but I'm finding there just isn't enough time in the weekend to get everything done. The kids are playing a checking account game right now (and enjoying themselves for the most part... until their balance has been significantly depleted), so I'm trying to squeeze this in quickly. Before getting into last week's math happenings, I'd like to reach out to anyone willing and able to send in items for the kids. We're running really low on tissues, pencils, and glue sticks and we've completely used up the giant bottle of hand sanitizer, so if anyone is feeling super generous out there, the kids and I would greatly appreciate the help. Now onto the math!
We spent the week reviewing the basics of ratios, rates, and proportions to prepare for this new week's topic of consumer applications. The kids did really well with the unit and as I'd expected, they are enjoying the real world aspect of the topics in a way that they didn't with algebra. While algebra can be and is applied in the real world, the kids have a harder time connecting with it at their age and level. They're already utilizing some of the concepts for proportional reasoning and consumer math in their daily lives, so they immediately feel more of a connection with the topic and can better appreciate it's use, therefore they are more invested in ensuring they understand what they are doing (I haven't had a single kid ask "how am I going to use this stuff?" yet!). You might also find that the kids will (hopefully) better appreciate the cost of things after today's work alone based on all the moans and groans after each debit from their pretend accounts.
Well, it's time to wrap up their game and get on with the rest of the day's work so I'll close things out here. As always, if you have any questions, feel free to email at anytime. Hope everyone has a great week!
