And that's a wrap on the first half of the year! Well, for the kids at least. They loaded me down with papers this week, which is awesome in that I've finally gotten some of the papers I've been begging them to turn in (some for literally months now!), but that means I have a lot of grading to do this weekend in order to send grades before the Monday morning deadline. Please do not worry that the kids won't get credit for their work, but it's going to take me all weekend to get them wrapped up. On that note, please help me with the second half of the year by encouraging/pushing the kids to turn all of their work in on time. I am totally understanding about needing an extra day or two to get some assignments done as I know life can be busy and the spring months always seem to be a little busier. However, turning in work weeks or even months is definitely pushing the limits.
Moving onto this week's work, we wrapped up our work on consumer math and in place of our "normal" quiz to assess their knowledge, we (the 7th grade math team) decided to do a mini-project in class. This was probably the best decision we've ever made as I've never seen this group get so into an assignment before! The looks of pure joy and excitement were truly inspiring for me as their teacher. I added an extra tech component for my own students (I'm a tech nerd, so I couldn't pass up the opportunity!) to have the kids set up their own "cash registers" through a Google Spreadsheet, programming it to do their calculations for them after we'd reviewed how to do everything "old school" on paper. The kids took to it instantly and the literal "Oohs" and "Aahs" I heard when they saw the immediate results/calculations was so uplifting for me. Their awe continued on "shopping day" when their classmates would come "check out" and they could calculate their customers totals in seconds through the spreadsheet. Those are the moments you dream about as a teacher. The realities of an "SOL (education) world" mean we do not always have the time for this type of work, but I will definitely try a little harder to find the time when possible (please, no more snow!).
Next week will sadly not be as much fun as we have the county's term 2 benchmark test to review for then take. A digital copy of the review sheet can be found online (Pd 1-2 MSM2 & Pd 3 7H) for the kids who want to start studying this weekend, but paper copies will be based out next week. My schedule outside of school hours is pretty packed the next couple weeks, so it doesn't look like I will be able to hold another after school help session until February 22nd; this may change, but I will include that in future updates.
Well, it's time to start tackling those papers (with breaks to tackle the chores), so I'm going to close things out here. As always, please feel free to email with any questions. Hope everyone has an awesome weekend!
