Happy New Year! As you can imagine, these unexpectedly shortened week means I don't have much new information to share. I do want to start by welcoming back, Mrs. Lee, my amazing co-teacher! The kids and I are thrilled to have you back! I also wanted to reshare some information that has already gone out from the district as well as from the school. The new cell phone policy went into act with our return. More information about that can be found on the district's site as well as in the Standards for Student Conduct book from the school board (pg. 17-21). The email from Dr. Hicks with how that will look at Carver was sent on January 1st, but let me know if you have trouble finding it and would like me to forward you a copy for your records.
Additionally, the district updated the policy on the treatment of transgender students, but this has resulted in affects to cisgendered students as well due to the parts of the policy related to students names. Staff can now only use names that are officially listed in Synergy (AKA ParentVUE/StudentVUE), which means any student wanting to be called something other than their legal name needs a parent/guardian to update their information if they haven't done so already. There are two options: Nickname (only adds an additional nickname for student use; all school documents will still have the students formal name listed in Synergy for all school platforms/documents) or Preferred Name Change (changes the student's name in Synergy and listed for all school platforms/documents). The links provided are to the directions for adding a nickname and the form for updating the preferred name. Students who go by their middle name don't necessarily need to be concerned if it's in the school's files, however some teachers do not have access to the pages that would show that, so I would still recommend that parents/guardians add that to the nickname.
In regards to math, with many students still absent the past two days, we're still trying to wrap up the quiz from before break. I've requested that students who still haven't completed their first takes do so if at all possible this weekend so that we can go over it for the final take on Monday (or whatever that day ends up being depending on what tonight's storm brings). Additionally, I just completed and posted the final extra credit opportunity of the term. Students and families are reminded that the term ends next week (Wed. 1/15), but that the Canvas assignments will close at midnight the night before (this is to allow for adjustments as needed as well to ensure enought time is provided to sync with Synergy for posting). Please help me by encouraging the kids to take advantage of these last opportunities to improve upon their grades.
That's everything for now, but I want to wish everyone a safe, warm weekend! As always, please feel free to email if you have any questions or concerns. Have a great weekend!
