Howdy! While it's been another short week made even shorter due to the weather, it's still been another fun filled week of math here in Room 705. We're fully immersed in our consumer math work and the kids seem to have really gotten into the topic. So much so that we've gotten a little of track from the assignments at times with classroom discussions, but they've been asking some really great questions and I'm happy to explore any topic that gets them interested in math concepts. While some of their questions (ex. asking about how student loans work and what collateral is) don't directly relate to the SOLs requirements, I think the added discussions have really gotten them invested in this unit overall. There have also been many shared stories that added to the discussions (ex. stories about times they've been out to eat and issues with the bill when it came or about items they've bought on sale), so things always loop back to the SOL-related work. I even came across a TikTok video illustrating the need to understand these concepts, which I then shared with the kids and I think they all appreciated (afterall, if it's on TikTok, it has to be important, right?).
Due to the lost time from both the weather and our extended discussions, I decided to streamline things and combine some of our lessons with their graded formative check by going through the whole thing with them in detail. Yes, this means they were essentially given all the answers (and they absolutely have no excuse not to have a 100% on it if they were in class today, 1/21), but I also had them add additional notes to the paper copy of the assignment going over some of the twists and tricks in the questions they might see in the future. Some of the kids found that they were originally falling for those tricks (I lost count of how many times I heard kids exclaim "OH!" each block), so I even had a few kids thanking me at the end of the class... and 4th block even gave me a round of applause when I said what we'd be doing today.
Finally, the kids have been given time to work on their "Stock Your Store!" project in class, but we haven't gotten around to setting up the cash registers yet due to all the stuff listed above. The plan is to work on that Monday (possibly Tuesday), so the kids don't need to worry about that this weekend, but they should make sure their stores are otherwise "set up" on the slideshow and that they have at least ten items listed on the worksheet, including the five discounted percentages. They can sell pretty much anything they want as long as it doesn't violate school policy or would be against the law in real life (I couldn't believe I had to add that last part, but someone wanted to sell body parts like severed fingers in their store... the things they didn't prepare me for in my teacher prep program in college!). Anyway, they should finish all the "fun parts" of the project this weekend, so we can tackle the "mathy parts" in class on Monday.
That should do it but as always, please let me know if you have any questions. Hope everyone has an amazing weekend!
