So this past week was interesting, wasn't it?! I hope all the kids enjoyed their time off due to the snow, but I appreciate all the kids who made time for math work over those days. I'll freely admit to completely taking advantage of the chance to sleep in those days, but I also spent a good bit of time working, though it wasn't easy trying to figure out exactly how to update plans to work around the missed days when we weren't sure how long we'd actually be out. As I mentioned in the last posting, the 7H unit on polynomials will be moved to the end of the year after SOL testing since that is a high school level topic unrelated to the other topics we're covering now. At the moment, I don't think the MSM2 pacing needs to be changed too much, though the first two units will be shortened since they are Math 8 topics (Pythagorean theorem and angle relationships) that are not on the Math 7 SOL taken by the MSM2 students. I don't want to move those to the end of the year since they tie into the next unit on quadrilaterals. However, the quizzes will be turned into "classwork quizzes," meaning we'll work on those together so the kids get the extra practice with those topics in an electronic assessment format.
Since we were only at school for two shortened days, there isn't quite as much to share on this past week's happenings. The 7H students started working on the Pythagorean theorem and though we'll only had a short time to cover it, they've done well with it so far. We'll continue our work with it this week. The MSM2 students spent their shortened time working on the test for the previous two units. I had already planned for this grade to go onto the third term when the forecast made it apparent we'd have a few snow days last week, so students who were absent and the few who didn't finish do not have to worry about receiving an Incomplete for the second term and semester.
The kids have tomorrow off from school while we (the teachers) wrap up grades. I still have some of the TenMarks extra credit to add in as well as a few assignments completed and turned in at the end of last week, so some students' grades can still go up but otherwise grades are pretty much set for the term and semester. Kids, enjoy your day off tomorrow, but be ready to get right back to work again on Tuesday when your return!
