Howdy! I've got a load of things to take care of this weekend, so I'm keeping this update fairly quick. I would like to start by again asking parents and guardians to help with pushing the kids to do everything they can to improve upon their current grades before the end of term. We've only got three weeks before the end of term and there are quite a few kids who have gotten behind in work. A good bit because of the yucky bug that's been going around (lots of students and teachers alike out for days at a time... stay healthy folks!) and while adjustments can and will be made for students who have missed multiple days, the assignments as listed in the gradebook still need to be done. Please help me by looking over grades in Synergy (ParentVUE/StudentVUE) and then encouraging kids to complete the assignments listed as missing/incomplete and to redo/correct low-grade assignments/assessments.
The honors class wrapped up their work with 3-D models and seemed to really enjoy the unit, a good bit due to the fact they got a little time to play with blocks. The blocks did serve a purpose in allowing the kids to observe figures from problems at different directions, but the kids found ways to just "be kids" and have some fun with it (1, 2, 3, 4). After quizzing on the topic, we moved onto surface area and volume, extending their work on 3-D figures. So far we've just reviewed prisms and cylinders, but we'll be moving onto pyramids and cones next week before wrapping up our work with geometry.
The MSM2 students started the week with the test for the last unit. There had been some issues with the testing system earlier in the day, so I was able to get paper copies of the test in case it wasn't back up. Thankfully the system was up and working, but since the papers couldn't be uncopied, the kids had a paper copy to do all their work on this time. I was thus a bit disappointed that a few kids still did not show work for their problems, which sadly showed equally in their grades, but I have seen many others continue to improve in that area, so many thanks to the parents who have reinforced what I'm telling the kids in class. Please keep pushing them to keep it up! For the kids that finished before the end of the block, I found a new resource they got to try; check out one example of the augmented reality coloring sheets from QuiverVision... so cool! After the test we moved onto working with geometric transformations. The kids were a bit intimidated at first but have quickly taken to the topic. We did run into a bit of a snag when I first attempted giving a Khan Academy assignment. While some questions within KA's practice sections for transformations work for our SOLs, many would be considered high school level questions here in the state of Virginia. In the end I had to amend the assignment for just translations, which the kids have rocked and many finished pretty quickly. Those that didn't finish it by Friday will have some time Monday to finish, but I did encourage them to work over the weekend as well.
Well, that ended up longer than planned, but I'm sure you are all used to that by now! It's time to move the laundry from the washer to the dryer and unload the dishwasher anyway (the exciting life of a teacher, folks!), so I'll close things out here. As always, let me know if you have any questions. Until next week folks! Have a great weekend!
