Greetings!
Before getting into assignments and grades, which I'm sure the kids are most interested in, we (the 7th grade team) would like to request that parents/guardians complete the student information form found at bit.ly/7edms2021. We want to ensure we have the most up-to-date contact information possible, so it would be greatly appreciated if it could be completed at your earliest convenience. Math teachers are taking care of the form and the responses will be shared with the rest of the teachers so you will not have to complete it for each of us individually. If you need to send updated contact information at anytime, please feel free to submit it again in the future as needed.
In regards to assignments/grades, I just wanted to make sure everyone knew a couple things about them for my class as I've just finished entering the first grade of the year, the Virtual Introduction assignment from last week. If you log into StudentVUE/ParentVUE and see that the student has a 1 listed in the score column, the student did exactly what they need to do and should be on track in regards to submitting assignments through Canvas.
If you see that it is listed with a 0 and as Missing, then it has not been submitted yet on Canvas and thus cannot be graded. This doesn't necessarily mean anything bad and can easily be rectified so the student can earn back the lost point. In some cases, the student has already completed the assignment and simply forgot to hit Submit on the Canvas page; in this case, they just need to go back onto Canvas and click on the blue Submit button that should appear in the top right corner. In other instances, it could be that the student made a separate copy and completed the work there; this is an unnecessary step student's can skip as the copy they see on Canvas is their copy. They shouldn't immediately delete the extra copy though as they can copy and paste all of the work into their Canvas copy, and then click submit to earn credit.
Of course there are still some who haven't completed the work at all, but I know many kids are still dealing with tech issues. For students who are dealing with slow loading, try logging onto Canvas outside of live class sessions as Google Meet slows down the system. For those students who are receiving error messages of any kind or not seeing a submit button, generally a page refresh will help with that but when the assignment loads in a separate tab, you will need to close and reopen from Canvas. If you still can't figure out what's wrong, please send me a screenshot or video of the issue and I'll try to help you troubleshoot and work through it.
Throughout the time we're working virtually, I know other issues will probably pop up along the way and I will happily work with folks to make sure it doesn't have any long term negative effects on students and their grades. Please see zeros and notes as "missing" as an extra reminder that something needs to be taken care of for class. Obviously I don't want kids putting the work off for weeks on end as that will lead to other issues altogether academically speaking, but a day or two late as we navigate a tech problem will not be held against students.
Please let me know if you have any questions and thank you for your continued support and involvement. Hope you all have a great week!
