Hello, wonderful people! Let's carry on where we left off last week. As mentioned in the last update, the B-day students got the Pythagorean theorem word problem practice at the start of the week and Wednesday and Thursday were spent on the quiz, also allowing kids to catch up on some of their missing work once finished. The results on the quiz were good overall, but there were still students who didn't perform the greatest. It needs to be noted that for most of those students who didn't do well, they used no notes (even though it was both permitted and encouraged) and/or didn't set up their Desmos calculators when we reviewed that prior to the quiz.
I know that absences have made it harder for some students to prepare and some have asked if they could have more time, but I still have quite a few topics to get through before SOL testing and there's simply no time to push things off. However, with the upcoming writing SOL test (March 15th-16th) I have needed to rework plans a bit to compensate for the time we'll lose those mornings, so was able to make March 20th-21st into "catch-up days" to cover anything missed due to SOL testing as well as catching up kids who have missed for absences. Otherwise, I can't push back lessons anymore and still cover everything before our own SOL test (tentatively scheduled for May 25th, pending final approval of the testing calendar). Folks are reminded of my own morning help sessions (Tuesdays and Thursdays starting at 7AM) and the school's Royal Tutoring program (sign-up here) as well as the additional resources mentioned in last week's update.
The week wrapped up with A-day students starting our surface area and volume unit. This will carry through all of next week and assessed the following with both my own quiz and a common test, which will be the second and last test of the term. The other already on the calendar, which takes place the last week of term, will be the first grade on the final quarter. I will try to have the usual extra credit assignment set up by then and have that available through spring break, so be on the lookout for that.
That should cover everything and as always, please let me know if you have any questions. Hope you all have an amazing weekend!
