Howdy, folks! We've had a busy week here, but I'll try to keep this on the shorter side (yes, I realized I've said that before... and then failed miserably at that, but I promise I'll try!). We started the week with a little catch up as there were still kids who hadn't finished the composite figures quiz and others who wanted some time for their second attempt. I also used the day as an opportunity to introduce the kids to Khan Academy while at the same time getting in a formative assessment grade with a short 9 question "test" introducing a little more geometry for the kids. Accessing Khan Academy has sadly been made a little more complicated this year, but it's accessed via the Rapid Identity Backpack and full directions on how to access can be found in the announcements on Canvas. Students were also given the opportunity to get a head start on their MAP test Monday. Since it's a pretty long test, I think most of the kids appreciated that opportunity since most were able to knock the rest of it out on Tuesday.
Make-up MAP testing sessions have been offered the rest of the week and will continue at the beginning of next week. This is unfortunately necessary since I'm still waiting on a few students to complete it along with other missing assessments and assignments. The only grade being taken for the MAP test is just for completing it, so students have been reminded of this to decrease the anxiety often associated with standardized testing, but there is an extra credit opportunity tied to it as well since students can earn 2.5 points towards the summative category for showing any growth in their score and a full 5 points for meeting their goal. There are also still quite a few students who owe at least the first attempt on the last quiz (Quiz 4.02 Composite Figures) and many who haven't completed the Khan Academy work. I've spoken with and/or emailed all students about the missing work and have started the process of reaching out to parents/guardians, but I'd really appreciate it if parents/guardians could look over ParentVUE grades this weekend and speak with the kids in regards to taking care of the missing work.
The rest of the week has been devoted to exploring surface area and volume, specifically for rectangular prisms and cylinders this week. We'll be continuing this work next week before taking the quiz mid-week and will then start our last new topic of the year! Yes, we're that close to finishing the bulk of our work! We'll then review everything we've covered this year, both as a refresher for the kids who are opting to take the SOL test but also to insure the kids will leave at the end of the year with a really solid understanding of everything we've done, thus setting them up with an even stronger foundation before they head into next year.
Well, my typing kind of got away from me again (I know, I know!), so I'm going to wrap things up. As always, please feel free to reach out if you have any questions. Hope you all have an amazing weekend!
