Greetings, folks! I'm in the midst of working on a vocabulary review activity to help us prepare for state testing, so I'm going to keep today's update on the short-and-sweet side so I can get back to it. First for my fellow teachers, check out MyWordle! You can create your own Wordle-like puzzles there (and I've seen enough kids playing the original Wordle often enough to know that some really like it), so I'm giving the kids a clue or definition for each word along with a link to check that they guessed correctly through the puzzles.
In regards to this week's math work, we continued delving into the world of geometric transformations most of the week and the kids were pleasantly surprised with how easy they were finding the work. The number of times I heard "that was way easier than I thought it would be" or something similar was almost comical. The kids have done really well with the topic and felt so confident in it that several asked if they could start the quiz early. I gave them the option of doing so after a little review on Friday, though the kids who chose to wait and those who need extra time will be given that time as previously planned on Monday. For those who opted to take it today, I continued hearing phrases like "this is so easy" (one kid even thanked me!) and the results have all been really great!
The week was partially broken up with our final round of math MAP testing. I know how much the kids dread these tests, but I reminded them that the only thing we wanted to see from it was that they've improved from earlier in the year (it is called the MAP growth assessment after all) rather than aiming for a specific score as the SOLs require. Unfortunately some kids tend to not take the test too seriously since they know it doesn't count as a grade, so as extra incentive to give it their best effort, I told them that for every point they grew, it would count as an extra ALEK topic completed. That proved to be a huge motivator and I saw more focus and effort those two days than I think I have all year! I'm so proud of how hard the kids worked and with the added ALEKS points, they can see how much their efforts paid off!
Next week once this last unit quiz is completed we'll be starting our first bit of SOL review. I'm giving them a pretty big packet with a good chunk of our work reviewing everything we've covered this year, but I will not be giving out paper copies of the accompanying formative checks or quizzes to get them ready for the fact that they will only be given blank paper for the actual SOL.
Well, I'm sure you're all shocked that this wasn't as short-and-sweet as planned, but now I'll wrap this up and get back to my activity creation. I hope everyone has an amazing weekend!
