All official grades are posted on ParventVUE/StudentVUE, but can also be viewed on Canvas; to see details as to why points might have been lost and how to possibly improve grades, view the individual assignments/assessments on Canvas. Student assignments and grading will fall under one of two categories; summative or formative. Grades will be updated a minimum of every two weeks. I am using the 15th and the 30th as a guideline.
Grade Categories
Formative—40%
Formative assignments and assessments are those students tackle through the process of learning and their progress drives instructional strategies. Formative assignments are generally graded for completion or effort, whereas formative assessments are graded for accuracy. Student tasks may include pretests, warm-ups, problems of the day, classwork, independent work, labs, group work, ALEKS work, exit tickets, etc.
Summative—60%
Summative assignments and assessments are a measure of student mastery of specific content. Summative assessments may include traditional quizzes, tests, projects (individual and group) and labs. Assessments all come with a second attempt and the two scores are averaged together.
Overall Grade Calculation
Each semester is broken down into two terms. Each term is worth 50% of the semester grade. The overall course grade is 50% first semester, 50% second semester.
Error Analysis
An error analysis is a great way to bring up your grade throughout the year. Error analysis can automatically be done on all summative work to earn back half credit for anything still wrong after the second attempt has been completed (formatives can simply be completely redone for full credit).
Why should I do an error analysis?
Earn full credit back on formative assignments & assessments
Earn half credit back on quizzes & tests.
Learn from your mistakes
What does an error analysis involve? Using the Correction Form (copies are located in each quiz module):
Rework each incorrect problem, SHOWING YOUR NEW, CORRECT WORK.
Indicate your new answer on the correct line.
Write a one sentence explanation of why that is the correct answer. "That answer is correct because..."
What are some unacceptable sentences for the analysis?
I did the math wrong.
I didn’t get it the first time but I do now.
Can I do an error analysis more than once on an assignment?
SURE! Keep trying until you get it correct! My goal is for you to learn the most, not penalize you for needing more time to finish that learning.
