Happy (partial) snow day! I hope everyone is staying warm on this chilly winter day! It's been a busy week and I'm going to try to knock out this update while the kids are wrapping up some of their own work so I can head home as soon as the kids take off this afternoon (fingers crossed for no late or double-back buses this afternoon!).
We spent the week working on probability, one of my favorite units of the year. The kids typically enjoy it as well, in part because they get to play a few games throughout our work. There's also an upcoming Skittles activity they always enjoy for the obvious reasons. With the delay this morning (on top of 7th grade being down to one really slow copier right now), I wasn't able to get copies of the letter requesting support for this activity. If anyone out there is willing and able to help with this, we need the fun/snack-size bags of original Skittles (not any of the other flavors - the activity is completed based on the probability of each specific color; the small "fun-size" bags since no one needs sugared up 7th graders running around). We'll carry on with our probability work most of next week, hopefully quizzing on Thursday before we launch into our work with geometry, the last "type" of math we cover before we start reviewing for SOLs.
Thursday found us taking the quiz for the previous consumer math unit, though I was thankfully able to be in school that day rather than sitting on a jury over the river. Fingers crossed I won't be called again this session! This week's quiz day also saw us starting our new math notebook check procedures. Rather than me trying to find the time to collect and look through every student's notebook during class (which ate up WAAAAYYYYY too much time), I now set up questions via Canvas that come directly from those covered in class. As long as students follow along with what I'm going over on the board, it's an easy 100A+. I'm hoping this new procedure will not only save time, but also push the students to pay closer attention during instruction. Corrections will be allowed for this the same as they are for quizzes, the difference being that students can earn full credit back for the first three checks we do this way.
Well, I'm going to wrap things up here so I can try to knock out a few more grades as well while the kids are (mostly) quietly working (I'm sure you can imagine the underlying energy that snow brings to a school). As always, if you have any questions, please feel free to email at anytime.
Hope you all have a great weekend!
