And we've made it to winter break! Since I'm just as eager to head out to start my break as the kids, I'm going to try to keep this update on the "short and sweet" side. We reviewed the steps of solving multi-step equations at the start of the week and because I put extra time into solving practice, I went through the word problems and property questions on the formative check with the kids. On Wednesday and Thursday, we went through a few questions from the review one final time before the kids completed the quiz. For those students who missed the quiz or didn't finish in class, I highly encourage them to use the break to complete it and get caught up on work. For my A-day students, the week concluded by starting our work on inequalities, which was mostly a review of what they learned last year for this topic but also discovering how negative coefficients impact the problem. As I'm sure they'll need reminders of what was covered today, I'll review before we move onto solving multi-step inequalities.
This week I sent out emails to all parents and guardians of students currently failing or at risk of failing with an update on grades and what all can be done to improve grades, but all grades can be seen on the Tyler portal and almost everything can be improved upon either by submitting it if it's missing (if the grade is a zero, it's missing), retaking (quizzes can be redone once while formative checks can be redone an unlimited number of times), or corrected (all quizzes and tests can be corrected to earn back half credit for missed items). The previously mentioned extra credit opportunities can also still be completed even though they were officially due today (please be aware that some of the programs for the Hour of Code would have closed back up when CS in Education Week concluded last Sunday, but many programs are still available throughout the year). I'll be setting up a final extra credit opportunity on IXL during the break that kids will be able to do through January that will be applied to the test category.
Also as previously mentioned, I'm now running the Edmentum reports for the Royal Block grades (i.e. RB Q2 Week ##) on Mondays for the previous week's progress to allow for weekend make-up time as needed. Since we're heading into the break, the report from this week will get run after the break is over and any work completed during the break will go towards any previously missing time. You might see things get updated during the break if my family's plans permit, but as I am also on break, I can only promise the update for once break is over.
Well that should cover everything from this week, but please feel free to reach out if you have any questions. I do just want to warn that I might not be able to reply until the break is over, but you will most definitely hear back from me before the first week post-break is over. And with that, I just want to wish everyone very happy and safe holidays!
