Greetings! I actually had most of this typed up on Friday but I was so eager to head out (it was my birthday and I had family plans I'd been looking forward to all week), that I forgot to send it and only realized late last night that I hadn't sent it off. This actually works out a little in everyone's favor since tomorrow's projected winter weather will end up changing up plans for the rest of the week. Last week I introduced kids to their first big project of the year and it would have been due this upcoming Friday. With the likelihood that we'll be out tomorrow (at least that's what this morning's weather report implied), I've pushed the project to being due next Monday (2/25) to allow extra time during the week on our regular content and to give the kids time to work on the project tomorrow (during our possible/probable ice storm) and over the weekend.
The kids have all gotten the introduction for this project in class at this point, which has the students designing their own store (in a Google Slideshow). In their store, they will discount 5 of their required 10 items, thus practicing some of their new consumer math skills. This week, I will walk the kids through how to set up their "cash registers" (using Google Sheets) to calculate their totals (including the purchase of multiple items, discounted items, sales tax, and even applying "if, then" coupons). The kids all seem to be really into the project already and have some pretty cool ideas from what I'm hearing already. That being said, sometimes they get a little too into the design part and lose focus of the math, so they should spend their weekend time working the design independently, giving us the opportunity to focus on the math work side in class.
As mentioned, last week has been spent working on consumer applications. We started by simply working on the percent proportion, which can be used to solve all the other forms of consumer math covered in this unit, though it is definitely not the only method. From there, we moved onto percent of change and percent of a number. The rest of the time and most of this week will be devoted to discounts, tax, tip, commission, and markup with a small bit of simple interest. Depending on how fast we get through everything, the current plan is still to quiz on Friday, but we'll see how the rest of the week pans out and whether the quiz will need to be bumped at all.
Thank you to those who sent in glue sticks and pencils. Those are two things we will always need, so if you ever see a good deal and feel like sending in some for the kids, we'd all greatly appreciate it. I bought a giant bottle of hand sanitizer, so that should last us for quite a while and thus is no longer needed. While I bought some tissues as well, at the rate the kids are going through them, we'll probably be in need again in the near future. Between the current cold season and upcoming allergy season, we'll go through thousands of tissues before the end of the year!
Well, the kids are starting to trickle into class, so I'll close this out now. As always, feel free to email if you have any questions. Hope everyone has a great week! Stay safe and warm tomorrow!
