Greetings! I'm trying to get this update out early since I've got another busy weekend ahead and I'm hoping the early posting will give students a push to use the weekend to catch up on work. I felt this was important since some students are already behind in work for the first unit of the term. Despite having gone over much of the work in detail together and giving the students all of Thursday to catch up on work, too many students are still choosing not to complete assignments. I'm still entering grades for the digital components of the work, but all math notebook grades have been recorded in the gradebook already. I'm hearing all the other 7th grade teachers worrying about students not putting forth enough effort to stay on top of their work, so the issue seems to be widespread. Parents and guardians, please help me by pushing the kids to both catch up on the current work now and to not fall behind the rest of the term.
Regarding this week's work, we continued working with statistics, adding in covering boxplots (formerly known as box-and-whisker plots). In addition to "traditional" math assignments ("old school" problems and the like), I also showed the kids who they can use Google Sheets (or similar spreadsheet programs) to create sort through data and analyze the information in detail. Hearing the literal "ohs and awes" when they set it up to calculate the important points and information are the moments that any teacher loves! The kids were even more in awe when I showed them how they could customize their graphs with different colors, fonts, etc. (middle schoolers love customizing their tech!). Check out my latest post on the class Instagram for some samples of their work. The kids did a great job with this unit overall, but for those who didn't stay on top of the assignments and follow along with class throughout the week, the lack of effort showed in their quiz scores on Friday. This is why it's crucial that students complete the work as it's assigned rather than after the assessment.
Well, it's about time for me to be heading out so I'm going to wrap things up here. As always, if anyone has any questions, feel free to email at any time. Hope everyone has a great weekend!
