Greetings! It's been a busy week, but we've finally gotten to the point in the year where we can have some fun with our work. Well, I at least think the rest of our activities are fun and I hope the kids feel the same way. The kids started the week by taking the county post-test on Monday and Tuesday (some wrapping up on Wednesday as needed). The kids can and should take advantage of the chance to improve upon their score by completing test corrections but at this point, only a few kids have taken advantage of this opportunity; please help me by encouraging them to not let this chance pass them by! They also have one last chance to earn extra credit points towards the formative assignment category. By completing up to two hours on ALEKS (located in the backpack on the CCPS dashboard, then clicking the McGraw-Hill icon), the kids can earn up to 20 points. This isn't an "all or nothing" opportunity, so if kids complete any time, they'll earn a proportionate amount of points (1 hr = 10 pts, 30 min. = 5 pts, etc.). Finally, the last day I will be accepting any old work (missing/incomplete assignments or quiz/test corrections) will be Friday, June 7. Again, please help me by encouraging the kids to take advantage of these opportunities!
The rest of the week has been spent starting our coding project. We're just working on the coding components at this point and we're (literally) only in the early stages, but the kids seem to be enjoying themselves. I've heard a few joyful exclamations when they've programmed something correctly and it makes this teacher's heart so happy! We'll continue coding through next week and add in a few extra components (writing a backstory, designing cover art, and creating a gamer survey to gather feedback) to make it a little more like a true game development project. Chromebooks will not be collected until the last week of school (Tues. 6/11 to be exact), so if the kids end up needing a little more time to wrap up their project, it can easily be worked into plans. Once the coding project is finished, there's a smaller project that gets the kids looking for all the math that surrounds them on a daily basis, which they probably don't always notice.
That should cover everything but as always, feel free to email if you have any questions. I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend!
