We've finally made it through a whole week of school! Admittedly, it was rough for all of us (probably especially the teachers) to get back into the swing of things, but hopefully we can continue with these full weeks (I'm ignoring more talk of the "s-word" as long as I can) and all find our routine again. Before getting into the nitty-gritty of the week, I have a couple extra notes of interest. This week's "after school help session" will not be a tutoring session exactly as I need the extra time to work on getting grades wrapped up before the end of the week, which is the last day of term. Normally I would have just cancelled it altogether, but I wanted to leave it open in order to allow kids who needed it, the time to come in and take care of some of their missing assignments. I'll be there to help with the occasional question, but it would be more like "time on task" or a study hall rather than a normal tutoring session.
On that note, there are still a load of missing assignments from students, so everyone is encouraged to check grades on ParentVUE/StudentVUE. At the beginning of the week, I gave every student with a missing paper assignment a second (for some, a third) copy and a digital copy of all papers can always be found on the Daily Agenda (the kids have been told they could work the problems on regular notebook paper if they've lost their papers), so if they try to use the "I lost it" excuse, don't buy it!
We started the week off with MAP testing, which we'd been trying to get to since the beginning of the month. Most of the kids have finally wrapped it up, but WiFi issues most days during 3rd period has left some of those students still trying to finish it all up. I'm hoping we'll still be able to access it this week and the kids will be able to finish so that I can get there data added into Khan Academy. In regards to Khan Academy, I decided to hold off on uploading their MAP results so that there wouldn't be any potential confusion on which KA assignments will earn them extra credit and what's simply extra practice. Just an FYI, the kids should access Khan Academy through "the backpack" on their MyCCPS dashboard rather than going directly to the KA website.
The rest of the week has been spent working on consumer applications, AKA money math. Rather than having a quiz for this unit, we've turned it into a project that will have the kids applying what they've learned through the process of setting up their own "online store," with some of their items on clearance. I introduced the idea to the kids on Friday with an activity highlighting some of the work of previous students and the kids got really into the idea (I'm sure it's more the "store" than the math, but I'll take what I can get), so much so that some have already started making plans for their store. The kids will have plenty of time in class to work on the project this week, but they can definitely work on it outside of class time to work on the creative side of things. I had a little discussion and will add to it this week on marketing/advertising/business; that is obviously not my area of expertise, so if there are any family members out there with experience in it that wouldn't mind sending resources my way to help me add a little more detail, it would be greatly appreciated!
Before I close things out, we've about run out of pencils in class again. I can have the pencil container full at the beginning of the week and it's pretty much always empty by the end of the week (sometimes it's been emptied by the end of first block!), so if anyone is willing and able to send in some extras, we'd all be incredibly grateful!
Well, I got a little long-winded with this (big surprise, right?), so hopefully you've stuck with me through this whole thing. As always, feel free to email with any questions/concerns. Hope everyone has a great week!
