Howdy! We are 100% immersed in SOL review season now and math testing will start in just 15 days (Pd 1 on Mon. 5/22, Pd 3 on Wed. 5/23, & Pd 4 on Thurs. 5/24). There were a few students who needed to wrap up their practice SOL tests at the beginning of the week, but once that was finished we were able to move onto reviewing with a good baseline on the areas we all need to give extra attention. Throughout the review, the kids are taking five "mini SOLs," nine question quizzes that add up to be the equivalent of another practice SOL test.
As the kids have been told in class, after the last of their SOL quizzes has been taken, if the combined score is higher than their original practice SOL, it will replace that test score. While there will not be a grade for their actual SOL test, I will do the same with their actual SOL score using the high school exam conversion scale. If their actual SOL score is higher than the practice test or the five quizzes, those will be adjusted to reflect their growth; it's a motivator to push the kids to study and practice in these days leading up to the SOL test, but I also feel like it's only fair to reward their diligence and growth with this adjustment. To help with studying for these quizzes, the kids have written out the list of which standards will be represented on the five quizzes. They should have this list written on the back of their formula sheets, but here they are for the parents and guardians:
Math 8 (Pd 1 Honors)
Math 7 (Pd 3 & Pd 4 MSM2)
Quiz 1 - SOLs 8.1-8.3
Quiz 2 - SOLs 8.3-8.7
Quiz 3 - SOLs 8.8-8.11 & 8.13
Quiz 4 - SOLs 8.12 & 8.14-8.16
Quiz 5 - SOLs 8.15-8.17
Quiz 1 - SOLs 7.1 & 7.3 - Non-Calculator
Quiz 2 - SOLs 7.2-5
Quiz 3 - SOLs 7.6-7.9
Quiz 4 - SOLs 7.9-7.13
Quiz 5 - SOLs 7.13-7.15
We're going over these standards in class in their review packets, but the kids are highly encouraged to review outside of class as well. They have a second packet that they should be working on as homework each day (answers can be checked here for the CCPS Math 8 [Honors] packet and here for the CCPS Math 7 [MSM2] packets). They also have their usual IXL requirement for the month (1.5 hours for the month; additional if they owed time for April), a Math SOL Vocab list to practice on Vocabulary.com (100% complete with at least 70% mastery; sign in from the CCPS dashboard), and an extra credit opportunity through Study Island (top five topics with a minimum of 10 questions answered per topic). The next two weeks will be more of the same, so we'll try to jazz things up when possible, but it's go time!
It's also go time for mowing the lawn, so I'll be wrapping things up here for now. Before "leaving," I'd like to send my thanks to all the folks who helped out or sent stuff in for Teacher Appreciation Week last week! I loved all my presents and the whole faculty enjoyed everything set up by our PTA! Hope everyone has an awesome week!
