Greetings on this dreary Friday afternoon! Despite today's yucky weather, I hope everyone has had an amazing week! I'm hoping to skedaddle out of here a little faster today because of the weather, so I'm going to try to keep this on the "short and sweet" side (I think you've all noticed that's difficult for me, LOL!).
The first part of the week, both A-day and B-day students got a one-day review of some 6th and 7th grade topics, powers of ten and scientific notation, which is one of my favorite topics because we all get to geek out a little bit since my nerdy mind somehow linked the topic with Marvel superheroes and supervillains (check out the extra nerdy notes here). Even kids who aren't huge fans of the comics or movies are at least familiar with some of the characters and it helps everyone understand the magnitude of the numbers, recognizing how the exponents are affecting the number in its standard form.
The review is necessary for the next "new" topic, which is still familiar to the students - comparing and ordering real numbers. They've been doing components of this for years now with fractions, decimals, and percentages, but this year the kids have to be able to compare and order all the different numbers within the real number system. Numbers in scientific notation, perfect and imperfect squares, different positive and negative values, pi, etc. all get thrown into the mix. My A-day kids started working on this on Wednesday, but the B-day kids won't get into that until Monday since the past two days have been taken up with the state's SGA test that I mentioned last week.
We'll take a quiz on the topic by the end of next week and then we'll have our first test at the start of the following week (Oct. 10/11). The test is a "school test" as opposed to a "Ms. Lambert test," so the naming will be a little different than what you might have become used to from me at this point. The test will be listed as "CA Unit 1 Test (8.1, 8.2, 8.3)" as that's what Clements uses for their common assessments, but the test will cover everything from what I've set up as units 1 through 4 on Canvas and elsewhere (like the units folder here). I'm not sure yet if there will be a specific study guide for the test, but all of the formative checks and quizzes that I've given along with the other materials I've provided can and should be used for reviewing.
Well, it sounds like the rain is picking up and as you can see, I've obviously gotten carried away with my writing again, so I'm going to close things out here. Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions. Hope everyone has a safe, warm, and dry weekend!
