Greetings, folks! A speedy update today since my weekend is pretty packed and I'm worried (maybe hoping?) to get snowed in at my parents house tomorrow after my nieces Christmas play, so let's get to it. On Monday, we wrapped up our work on inequalities before taking the quiz on Tuesday. Before starting the quiz, I gave a little extra prep/review once the quiz papers were passed out since I was also looking at this quiz as prep/review for the test we took later in the week. The kids who followed my suggestions and tips did extremely well, but the kids who ignored my recommendations saw it result in decreased scores. One of the biggest issues I'm still struggling with is getting all the kids to show all their work, so I'm hoping I can rely on parents/guardians to help reinforce the importance of this as well as it only becomes more crucial as our work continues.
Wednesday saw some kids wrapping up their quiz while the rest participated in the Hour of Code. There a loads of sites that offer free coding opportunities year round, even more during the internationally recognized Hour of Code, but I always use Code.org since it's the same site we'll be using later in the year for the coding PBL project I'm hoping the year will permit (missing too many days for snow this winter might limit this possibility). Now that I've set the kids up with their accounts on Code.org, they'll be permitted to code in my class anytime they finish work early and have earned some free time. I'm hoping to develop a love of coding as it is a highly in-demand job field and there are some great opportunities in our area for kids interested in coding (some of our CCPS specialty centers as well as CodeRVA HS).
Thursday and Friday were set aside for a cumulative algebra test. The results for this so far have been very good, so it looks like many of the kids took some recommendations more seriously after the results of the inequalities quiz. Unfortunately, our testing system (PowerSchool) went down at the end of the day on Friday, so some of the kids were unable to finish the test. The problems were resolved last night (too late for us, but good for the future), so we'll try to wrap that up as soon as possible next week... whenever we're next there! Regarding next week, since we've wrapped up our current units, it would be a great time to review everything we've done so far this year if we are out next week as many are predicting. I personally won't make any predictions for what tomorrow's wintry weather might bring, so I'll hold off on planning out the next unit too far out until we have a better idea of what our week looks like and how administration might want to proceed with the winter reading MAPs test that is currently planned for Monday.
Well that should more than cover it but as always, feel free to email if you have any questions. I hope everyone stays safe and warm this weekend!
