Happy New Year, folks! As you know, this has been a super short week because of the snow, so I'll try to keep this update super short to match. Before getting into the new math work, I just want to remind everyone that the term ends next week. Because of this, ALEKS for this current term ends with this week's progress through Sunday, January 9th; kids have until then to complete the required 75 topics for the quarter (they can earn up to 5 additional points for extra credit, so a max of 80). I've been updating the ALEKS grade daily, so what you see listed today is current through yesterday's work (Thurs. 1/6). Next week's ALEKS work will be the first grade for the third quarter, though I'll be knocking the requirement down to just 5 topics per week to allow for additional time reviewing using other resources as we start to approach spring (aka SOL season). The kids have until Monday, January 10th, to complete any final work for all other graded items, which can be found in the Canvas modules; this includes quizzes (first and second attempts), quiz corrections, formative checks (unlimited attempts), and either of the extra credit opportunities. Please help me by encouraging the kids to make that extra push to get ahead as we approach the finish line!
To ease us back into things, I kept the first day back from break a catch-up day, in part because there were still quite a few missing assignments and quizzes from before the break. While most students have at least made their first attempt on everything, there are still a few kids who haven't submitted anything for one or more assignments; please check StudentVUE/ParentVUE to see what is still missing/incomplete. Thursday and Friday were spent reviewing ratios, rates, and proportions in preparation for future work, including next week's consumer math unit. While this week's unit wasn't new to the kids, I did show them a few new Desmos tricks to help since this was a non-calculator topic for them in previous years. We'll wrap this unit up on Monday (weather permitting) and then quiz on Tuesday. The formative check and quiz for this unit will be going onto the next quarter's grades (this allows for make-up time as needed for absent students), but since I use Canvas's syncing option for grades, I have to make the due dates on Canvas after the next term's start date to ensure things sync with the correct quarter. This won't have any negative effects on students' grades, but it does mean that the dates won't match up with the Daily Agenda, so I just wanted to give everyone a heads up about that.
Well, that should cover everything and I managed to not get too long-winded, so I'll wrap things up here. As always, please reach out if you have any questions. I hope everyone's doing well and that all the new yuckiness isn't hitting anyone too hard, but please let me know if I can do anything to help. Until next week, take care!
