Eva called me one morning - she is an apartment manager in Huntsville and one of her residents had a cat stuck in a tree since the previous night - she was referred to me by Huntsville Fire dispatch. It was only 15 minutes from my house and I agreed to be out after a work meeting. When I arrived, Eva led me top a park area where the owner of "Zeus" (Maria) was waiting for us. My heart sank when I spotted Zeus - he was 45 feet up a ridiculously skinny, unclimbable tree. I explained that I could not climb the tree, but could try hauling a basket up and hope that Zeus would take a ride down in it. We pulled the basket up, but this only scared Zeus a little higher and out on a tiny limb. At this point it was clear that Zeus was not going to get in the basket, so we tried to shake him down. We partially succeeded, he fell to another small limb at about 35 feet. At this point, a couple of neighbors offered a really long extension ladder used for roofing. We wrangled that up against the tree, and I climbed up within rescue pole range. I was able to snag Zeus, but he only had one front leg in the hoop. As I was pulling him over to me, he slipped out of the hoop right when he reached me - fortunately he was trying to grab on to anything to keep from falling and that was ME. After I peeled him off, he tried to escape back up the tree but I was able to hang on him. Fortunately, despite all of the rough handling, he never tried to bite me or go into beserk mode. I was able to hold him with one arm while I unpacked the cat bag with the other, and then was somehow able to stuff him into the bag while hanging on to the ladder. WHEW. Back on the ground, I handed the bag with Zeus to a relieved Maria who took him inside for some food, water and loving.
