- "Blackjack" (July 2015) - this is a short entry. This is a psuedo-rescue, as no climbing was needed, but I will count it anyway :). Blackjack (see June 2015) was stuck in a tree again in Tupelo MS, this time 70 feet up a pine tree and he had been stuck since the previous day. I could hear Blackjack's cries all the way from the street when I exited the truck. Amber led me to the tree, and my heart quailed a bit at how high Blackjack was - easily 70 feet - it was going be a long climb, made harder by the heat/humidity. I hauled my equipment out to the tree, but just before I started installing a climbing line, Amber and I began calling to Blackjack to try to calm him down. The effect was immediate, Blackjack started climbing down! Blackjack had already fallen out a tree once from 60 feet, so it was a bit heart-stopping watching him navigate from limb-to-limb, and come down the trunk butt-first in the longer stretches. He seemed to be doing well, and reached the last crotch at 18 feet. Since he had been navigating the climb down so well, I encouraged him to come down the rest of way. He started down, but then lost his grip and fell. I had no chance at catching him as he fell on the other side of a fence from me in the neighboring yard. He appeared a little stunned, but after Amanda reached him, he was quickly up and about, purring and walking normally. Amber took him on vet visit that afternoon, and he was ok except for a small cold. I hope that Blackjack will avoid climbing trees in the future as he has a bad habit of falling out of them!
