"Shamus" Caught in the Net

(early Feb 2020)

Executive Summary

Dawn called me. Their family kitty "Shamus", a special friend to their toddler James, had been stuck overnight in a tree in their neighbor's yard in Greenville MS, could I help? On arrival the next morning, I was met by Joel (Dawn's husband), and we drove to the neighbors house as it was separated from their backyard by a high fence. Jane, the owner of the house, met us and was happy that the kitty was to be rescued. Shamus was way out on a limb at about 30 feet, which also had a steeply sloping downward section that went to about 15 feet. I shot a throwbag to 50 feet for rope installation but this excited Shamus, and he began moving down the sloping section. His footing looked uneven, so I quickly fetched my large net and stood under him. There was a metal fence nearby that he might hit if he fell, so I held my net as high as possible. Shamus kept creeping down, lost his balance, hung by his front paws for a few seconds, and dropped --- right into my net! All cheered! Sportscenter top-10! It was also good that I caught him as this prevented Shamus from running off and becoming lost. Joel noted that Shamus had lost his outside privileges for the time being. Joel and Dawn, many thanks for your generous donation to the Oktibbeha County Humane Society!
