After the 'Flash' rescue, I drove to Courtland to attempt a rescue of 'Charlotte', a barn kitty who had been stuck for two nights. Temple (Charlotte's mom) said that a bucket truck rescue attempt just scared her higher up the tree. I asked Temple if she would be comfortable being hoisted into the tree, and she said that she would, as she had climbing wall experience, climbed a 60 foot satellite tower, and did a tandem skydive so heights did not bother her. After arrival, Boyce and Temple led me to the tree; a hardwood with one main stem that went up to 40 feet, began bending a little, and stopped at 60 feet which is where Charlotte was hanging out. After discussion, we decided to hoist Temple to a strong union at 30 feet and hope that Charlotte would come down, as she had been mobile in the tree. I rigged Temple up, and she as soon at 30 feet, calling to Charlotte. Unfortunately, Charlotte did not respond. After Temple was back on the ground, I told them I wanted to put a trap at that location as an initial approach at rescuing Charlotte. A climbing attempt would have to be done using a neighboring tree and pole grab, which would have a high risk of Charlotte falling, so I wanted to save that for a last resort. I rigged the trap at 30 feet and left for the day. That night, Boyce and Temple went out to the tree with strong flashlights. The trap was empty and still set, but Charlotte was no longer in the tree. The next day I went back and retrieved the trap, and also did a tree/area scan with Boyce assisting, but no Charlotte. We figured that Charlotte must have started down the tree, fell, and was hiding out. Later that night I received the good news that Charlotte had shown up at the barn, and was eating/drinking well with no obvious injuries. Boyce and Temple, many thanks for your extremely generous donation to the Oktibbeha County Humane Society!
