A group of Swedish and American linguists using statistical methods break the mysterious code Masons XVIII - cipher Kopiale (Copiale Cipher).
On the decoding 105-page manuscript, created in the late XVIII century, the researchers told a meeting of the Association of Computational Linguistics in Portland (USA).
The book is found in the academic archives of the former East Germany, is a neatly bound volume. On its gold and green pages with embossing is 75 thousand letters and mysterious characters. The manuscript is named for one of two unencrypted titles.
Kevin Knight of the Institute of Information Science, University of Southern California (USA), Beata Meyyuesi and Christian Schaefer of the University of Uppsala (Sweden) were able to decipher the first 16 pages. They contain a detailed description of the ritual of a secret society, fond of, apparently, eye surgery and ophthalmology.
Original language was not known, so the first thing scientists have suggested that the mysterious signs do not mean nothing, and the whole meaning is in Latin. This approach is not justified itself. Then they decided that this so-called homophonic cipher, that is, code that has no direct correspondence with the original information.
The researchers came to the conclusion that the original language - German, and the letters represent the blank values, which were to mislead the decoder. It soon became clear that Latin plays the role of gaps, and colon indicate the doubling of the preceding consonants. After this was made an ordinary frequency analysis to search for matches with the German language. The researchers published data decryption, and translation into English.
Experts praised the work of colleagues, but the Knight was a little unhappy: the code was relatively easy passes "to Gazeta.ru."
Nevertheless, the book sheds light on the spread of political ideas in the XVIII century. Secret societies, which were then commonplace, were influenced by the revolution in France and the United States. Well, in this manuscript, for example, contains a commentary on the natural rights of man.
