This was a new paddle for the Tuesday group. There where seventeen paddlers (Bob M., Bruce, Margaret, Ellis, Marti, Richard, Jeff, KAO, Carolyn, Bill, Gayle, Phyllis, Sherri, Bob B., Kevin, Helen, and Dona) who came for a fun trip through the wilderness on a beautiful day. When we arrived at the put-in we discovered that the US Navy had also picked the same day to practice their small boat launches and maneuvers, which I’m sure they never suspected they would run into seventeen paddlers on a normally quiet Tuesday. But we stayed out of their way and everything was fine. As we gathered for introductions, we discussed some pertinent facts about the paddle such as, the oxbow formations around the river, some history about the North Landing river, and the Pungo Ferry Bridge. Soon we were off on our paddle, starting across the North Landing river to the first oxbow and the tributaries of Alton’s Creek. What a beautiful paddle through the tall grass, wild flowers, and the many birds along the way. I was glad to have my phone to keep us straight (or me straight), on this very interesting and winding paddle of this creek. As we made our way through the creek, which was fun to navigate, we eventually made it back to the main river. From there we paddled back toward the bridge and took a look at some of the old boats that were laid to rest in the oxbows. These were transported out of the channel and sunk by using dynamite to blow holes in the bottom, some years age. We paddled back to the beach, this was probably about a 4 miles paddle, I said it would be 3 miles and Bruce said it would be 5, so there you go! The day was cooler then most August days (in the mid 80’s) with a pleasant breeze, making it a very comfortable paddle for the Tuesday group. We ate lunch at the picnic table by the beach, and Bruce brought a watermelon which he graciously cut up and shared, it was so good! Some us then went to Pungo Pizza & Ice Cream for some, what else, ICE CREAM!
